The Internet of Acoustic Things (IoAT)

Abstract

The convergence in sensing, computing, and communications — that perhaps started with smartphones — is now percolating at finer granularities. A lot of recent activity has centered around acoustic systems, including new kinds of ear phones, voice enabled devices (e.g., Amazon Echo), vibration based communication, acoustic localization, etc. A new eco-system is on the horizon, popularly being called as the Internet of Acoustic Things (IoAT). This talk will explore ideas, challenges, and opportunities underlying various IoAT systems, while also paying attention to security and privacy threats that arrive with such applications.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Romit Roy Choudhury is a Jerry Sanders Scholar and Professor of ECE and CS at UIUC. He joined UIUC from Fall 2013, prior to which he was an Associate Professor at Duke University. His research interests are in wireless sensing and networking. Along with his students, he received a few research awards, including the ACM Sigmobile Rockstar Award, the ACM MobiSys 2017 Best Paper Award, the Hoffmann Krippner Innovations Award, the NSF CAREER Award, etc. Visit Romit’s Systems Networking Research Group (SyNRG) at http://synrg.csl.illinois.edu.
