    Graduate Certificate Program in Information Systems Security (ISS)



    The Graduate Certificate Program in Information Systems Security has been designed for persons who are interested in science and methods for ensuring secrecy, integrity, and availability of information systems. The Certificate in Information Systems Security may be pursued concurrently with any of the graduate programs in the School of Information Technology and Engineering.

    Admission Requirements for the ISS Certificate Program


    This site is NOT the official source of information with respect to degree requirements. The official source is the current GMU catalog.

    For admission into the ISS certificate program, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

    Applicants are required to submit a brief (one- to two-page) statement of educational and work experience in the computing field that includes a self-assessment form, which can be obtained from the Department of Information and Software Systems Engineering. This form provides summary information concerning background and preparation for the program. For those students not enrolled in a graduate degree program at GMU, application for the ISS certificate program is made through the Graduate Admissions Office of the university. Students enrolled in a graduate degree program at GMU should apply to the Department of Information and Software Systems Engineering for admission into the certificate program.



    Requirements for the ISS Certificate

    Certificate candidates must complete four courses (subject to satisfying prerequisites INFS 601, 612, and 614), with an average grade of B or better, for a total of 12 credits of graduate study. To obtain the certificate a student needs to:

    • Take the following compulsory course:

      • INFS 762 - Information Security Principles

    • Take three courses from:

    The Committee on National Security Systems and the National Security Agency have certified that George Mason University offers a set of courseware that has been reviewed by National Level Information Assurance Subject Matter Experts and determined to meet National Training Standards for Information Systems Security Professionals, NSTISSI No. 4011, 4012, and 4013 for academic years 2005 - 2008.
