Doctoral GRA positions available at George Mason University

Multiple doctoral Graduate Research Assistant positions are available to conduct research in computer and network security in the Center for Secure information Systems, Volgenau School of Engineering, George Mason University, under the supervision of Dr. Massimiliano Albanese. The candidate will conduct research in the areas of modeling and detection of cyber-attacks, optimal defense strategies, and adaptive cyber defenses. The candidate will be also responsible for implementing prototypes and conducting experiments to validate theoretic results.

Qualifications and Prerequisites

To qualify for the position, candidates must apply and be admitted to the Ph.D. Program in Information Technology at the Volgenau School of Engineering, George Mason University. In addition to standard requirements, foreign students seeking GRA appointments need to have a total score of 100 on the internet based TOEFL, with a minimum of 23 in each section.

Specific qualifications for this position include:

  • Master level coursework on Network Security essentials
  • Coursework and/or prior experience in graph theory and algorithms
  • Familiarity with complexity analysis (preferred)
  • Coursework on Data Mining (preferred)
  • Expertise in combinatorial optimization (highly desirable)
  • Strong programming skills in at least one of the following programming languages: Java, C++
  • Good writing and communication skills

Appointment and Benefits

The initial appointment is for two consecutive academic semesters (9 months). Successive renewals are contingent to student performance and availability of funds. Summer funding is not guaranteed, and it is also contingent to student performance and availability of funds. The benefit package includes an academic year (9 months) stipend of approximately $17,000, and, if eligible, six credit hours of tuition each semester, health insurance, and the ability to take more courses at the instate tuition rate for out of state students.
